Why Do You Need Backflow Testing

The simple answer: if there is a large backflow preventer on your property, you are likely required to have it tested by a certified plumber once a year or so. The longer answer: backflow testing helps to protect your property and the public water supply.

Backflow is the undesired reversal of wastewater through the water supply pipes. Water pressure should move water in only one direction—towards the pipes, faucets, and fixtures on your property. But when something happens to change the pressure within the water supply, wastewater may get forced back through the public water supply, which could result in contamination. This is something no one wants to be held responsible for, so don’t skip out on this service.

How Backflow Occurs on Residential and Commercial Properties

The pressure in your water system may change for any number of reasons. In any case, it may cause water to reverse its flow and move back through the public supply. Here are just a couple of examples.

  • Emergency service technicians access a fire hydrant near your property, causing negative pressure that allows water to get sucked back up through the pipes. This is called back-siphonage. Water and pesticides pooling around a sprinkler head could also get sucked in through the pipes and may lead to a health concern.
  • A tank of water on a commercial property has a pipe or a hose leading into it. The pressure of the tank exceeds the pressure of the water supply, forcing water and whatever chemicals are in the tank back through the piping.

“On the suggestion of two separate friends, we called Murphy's to provide an estimate for a few plumbing jobs that needed attention: replacing an outdoor spigot, repair/replace our kitchen sink faucet, replace the garbage disposal unit, see what was causing a sometimes leaking issue from our tub upstairs through to our kitchen downstairs, and replacing the drain mechanism in our bathroom sink. Not only was Mike Rowe there first thing the next morning to look at each of these, he clearly determined what each needed, provided a detailed estimate, the option to purchase a contract (we did, which provided discounts to that day's work as well a walk-through annually to inspect plumbing throughout the house), and then was available to start the work right then. In a matter of hours, he had repaired and replaced all, always ready to explain each step. It has been such a pleasure to have these things working properly again! Thank you, Mike and Murphy's!”

“Service Technician Mike did a great job. Identified the problem and fixed it in less that an hour.”

The pipes for our shower were leaking, so they replaced some of the pipes and faucets in the shower. They also installed a shut off valve for the utility sink in the basement which was leaking a steady stream. It went very well from the beginning. The receptionist was wonderful and even indicated where I could find the best coupons for service. They were always prompt, and offered to cap the utility sink and other cost-saving solutions. They were even able to accommodate our schedule by coming on a Saturday.
