5 Things You Should Never Put Down Your Drain

DrainYour plumbing system is one of those things that you probably don’t think about too often. We understand that your plumbing system is mostly out of sight and out of mind, but we want to make sure you take some time to think about your plumbing system today.

If someone told you that you were using your plumbing system “incorrectly” you’d probably look at them with a confused look on your face. We don’t want to make you paranoid about the way you use your plumbing system, but we want to give you a few guidelines on how to use your plumbing system in a great manner.

Make Sure These Items Stay Out of Your Drain

Coffee Grounds: Coffee grounds are one of those substances that might seem completely benign but, in actuality, they’re terrible for your plumbing system. Coffee grounds make a sludge-like substance that’s the perfect storm for a clog. If you’re a coffee lover try composting your coffee grounds instead—their acidic qualities are great for flowers like azaleas!

Fruit Pits: Any stone fruit that you have in your home is an enemy of your garbage plumbing. Fruit pits are hard, and while the blades of your garbage disposal are durable, they’re not completely infallible. A fruit pit like this really puts some unnecessary wear and tear on your system. You can avoid many problems by letting items like this end up in the trash.

Egg Shells: This is one of those things that’s a common misconception among many homeowners. Lots of people like to say that egg shells are actually great to put down your drain because they sharpen the blades of your garbage disposable. In reality, egg shells are very hard to grind up and they can cause your garbage disposal to malfunction. Additionally, the film inside of the eggshell is an added obstacle to your garbage disposal. If you crack an egg make sure it ends up in the trash can rather than down your drain!

“Flushable” Wipes: We know that everyone loves that luxurious bathroom experience but those wet wipes that claim to be “flushable” rarely are. Wet wipes can never disintegrate the way that toilet paper does. Make sure you take care of your pipes by avoiding substances like these!

Food Fat: Any animal fat or grease should make its way into your trashcan. Even if you have an oil that’s currently a liquid, it will congeal once it makes its way down your pipe and has a chance to settle and form a sludge that catches many clogs. This includes dairy products too. If you’re a vegan this one still applies to you too! Make sure any nut butter that you use stays out of your drains too.
