Why Your Air Conditioner Output is Low

Frozen-ACLow air conditioner output is the absolute last thing that you want to deal with during a hot summer. It’s also a very common problem for homeowners to deal with. If you’re reading this blog, we’re going to guess that your own air conditioner isn’t performing the way you expect it should. There could be a number of different reasons for low air conditioner output. We recommend that you call a technician and have them inspect your system in-person if you want the best solution to your problem. While you’re waiting for your appointment, though, have a look below at some of the possible causes of low air conditioner output.

Refrigerant Leaks

Do you see any fluid dripping from your air conditioner in conjunction with the system’s output falling? If so, then you might have a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks are the result of corrosion on the pipes, which drain the air conditioner of the fluid it needs to cool your home. The lower the refrigerant level in the air conditioner, the less able to cool your home the system will become. This can eventually lead to the entire system breaking down, so it’s a good idea to call for repairs as soon as you notice this happening.

Air Handler Failure

The air handler is the part of the air conditioner that actually circulates air throughout the home while the system is operating. If the air handler malfunctions, as can sometimes happen, the system will have no way to actually blow cool air through your home. If the air conditioner seems to be on, but you don’t feel any air coming from your vents, it might be that you have an air handler problem.

Clogged Air Filter

The air filter in your air conditioner needs to be changed every three months or so, in order to prevent it from becoming clogged. A clogged air filter will cut off most of the airflow from reaching the system, which can cause all sorts of problems like the evaporator coil freezing over. If that happens, the system will be practically crippled until the ice is cleaned off and the filter replaced.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is an issue caused by the system experiencing some sort of electrical problem, usually. It manifests as a rapid on/off cycle, which the air conditioner will repeat over and over again instead of completing a full cooling cycle the way it was designed to. Not only does this prevent the system from cooling properly, but it also increases the amount of wear and tear the system suffers over time. If this isn’t dealt with properly, it can shorten the lifespan of the air conditioner considerably. Make sure you call a technician if you notice this problem.
