Normally, we write in this blog about ways to preserve your HVAC systems. Today, though, we figured we’d take a different approach by telling you some great ways to destroy your air conditioning system! Don’t follow any of the advice in this blog if you want your air conditioner to last as long as possible. In fact, do the exact opposite of everything we recommend here! Now, let’s get on to some of the best ways you can destroy your air conditioner as quickly as possible.
Don’t Size It Properly
Installing an air conditioner isn’t a matter of just finding one that physically fits in the space you have for it. Installing a system that provides too much output will cause it to shut down before it can complete a full cooling cycle. Using a system with too little output capacity for the size of your home will cause it to operate for longer than it is meant to. Either way, the outcome is the same: the system will waste more energy, break down more often, and need to be replaced earlier as a result of being sized improperly. So, if that is your goal, then by all means install a system without sizing it properly.
Don’t Schedule Maintenance for It. Ever.
Preventive maintenance is key to locating and resolving issues with the air conditioning system before they have the chance to get out of hand. Most air conditioning issues develop subtly, and only start to show symptoms after they’ve had plenty of time and opportunity to damage the system. Preventive maintenance resolves this by giving your technician the chance to catch these problems as early as possible.
Regular maintenance appointments, especially if conducted right before the summer season, will increase the air conditioner’s efficiency and lower the odds of significant problems occurring. It can even extend the effective lifespan of the system by a number of years.
So, if you’re out to destroy your air conditioner as quickly and thoroughly as possible, make sure you never schedule preventive maintenance for it! Just wait for some sort of symptom before calling for repairs, and even then maybe only do it after ignoring the problem for a couple of months. After all, what’s the worst that could happen?
Never Call for Repairs
Even with regular maintenance appointments, there’s a fair chance that some sort of problem will occur during the system’s lifespan. When that happens, the best thing to do for the health of the air conditioner would be to call for repairs as soon as you notice something wrong. Seeing as how we’re advising the exact opposite of what we normally would in this blog, though, we’re going to go ahead and say that you shouldn’t bother with calling for repairs at all. We’re sure that whatever is wrong with the system will work itself out eventually (It won’t. You should call for repairs. Seriously, this is all terrible advice.)
